Why Private Lessons Benefit Your Child

If your child has demonstrated a reliable interest in learning how to play the violin or viola, your child will benefit from private instruction. While most public schools in the area offer in-school instruction for beginners (a highly fortunate circumstance), the reality of violin or viola instruction is such that even the best instructors in the most successful school programs are limited in how much individual attention they can offer each student. The huge demands on attention and detail required from both the student and the teacher can often go unmet, resulting in poor habits, poor sound quality, and ultimately, less satisfaction. The best solution for ensuring that your child is getting the best individualized instruction available is to seek out private lessons.

Once you have made the decision to give your child private lessons, you will quickly become aware of the many obvious benefits to this type of instruction, in addition to a number of equally important, but less obvious benefits.

Let's begin with the obvious benefits. Developing any skill requires discipline. This is particularly the case in learning to play an instrument. Making any measurable progress requires regular effort, constant monitoring for the sake of ensuring that only good techniques are practiced regularly, and a willingness to proceed in the face of frustration, setbacks or other obstacles.
